Rotary shaft seals are dynamic seals for the rotating shafts of pumps, couplings and motors. Their function is to prevent the leakage of fluids or liquids from the system and, at the same time, the contamination of the system by external agents.
The structure comprises an elastomer profiled part and in some cases a compression spring.
To choose the best configuration, of a rotary shaft seal, one must take into consideration:
- the application conditions and, in particular, the contact fluid and operating temperatures
- the speed of rotation
- the pressure
Sealing rings are used as seals for rotating shafts mainly in the following applications:
- Motors for crankshaft and camshaft sealing
- Automobile and lorry transmissions (gearbox, differential, axles, wheel hubs)
- Agricultural and construction machinery
- Industrial mechanisms
- Hydraulic assemblies (pumps, motors)
- Machine tools
- Food industry
- Mining industry
- Steel industry
- Papermaking machines
- Naval sector
- Other widely used applications in general industry
Rotary seals can be made of rubber, polyurethane or other plastic materials such as PTFE to better meet application requirements. Through an in-depth study of geometries and materials, it is possible to achieve great advantages in both dust-tightness and pressurised fluids in terms of performance and durability.
